XReflections on particular habits of Western women.
Using burka cloth to create her pieces, this artist, together with the designer Sara Ostos, exhibits a lingerie collection created for the Western woman.
In the Muslim world women hide themselves and in the Western world the opposite is true. “Whilst Arabic women cover themselves and to a certain extent deny the existence of their body, Western women show off their naked bodies in public.” (Angelika Affentranger-Kirchrath speaking about Denise Kobler’s project, which fits so well with Yolanda Domínguez’s work).
Anorexia, tiny waistlines, and the inability to enjoy food are some of the limitations to which Western women are subject, slaves of our self-imposed social customs. For some time the Morrocan sociologist Fatema Mernissi has referred to the Western woman’s “slavery” to certain habits linked with body culture. It may well be that some women in a tiny village in the depths of Afghanistan are less enslaved than those incredibly stylish women who spend their time in fashionable places such as the Cote d’Azur, New York or California.
