Tribute to Gonzalo Cao
At #LACRIPTAPROJECTS, we are paying tribute to Gonzalo Cao, painter of Galician origin who died on January 19th at the age of 67.
Born in Pontevedra in 1956, he was a professor of Painting and Photography at the UCLM's Faculty of Fine Arts in Cuenca from 1989 to 2014. His sudden dismissal prompted a series of protests by students who, through the Faculty's Experimental Creation Centre, organized the funding, editing and publication of the book “Gonzalo Cao: 24 años paná”.
During his period at the Faculty he was a teacher of, among others, Miguel Ángel Barba, Pablo Valle and Juanmi, with whom he formed the so-called Nuevo Grupo de Cuenca to which we dedicated an exhibition in this gallery in 2008.
Despite having been a painter on the margins and with a bohemian spirit, he took part in several individual and group exhibitions in cities such as Cuenca, Madrid, Barcelona and New York. Among his creations, his endearing and at times enigmatic “monguis” will be especially remembered. Of these, we wanted to present a careful selection to honour the career of an artist who we consider one of the most genuine Spanish creators of recent decades.
